Unit Happenings – November 2014

Unit 8

The Eagle’s Nest Ladies Unit 8 Luncheon for September was held at Estrella Mountain Community College Restaurant called Regions. Lunch on Fridays is served buffet style with sit down style on Thursdays at Regions. We all had a wonderful meal and get together and got caught up on the latest PebbleCreek happenings! Just one of the gals Shawnee Robison.

Unit 19

Barbara Risden and Donna Frole

After canceling Unit 19’s pool party in July due to the extremely hot temperatures, we gathered on October 2 in much cooler weather. About 28 neighbors met for snacks and a dip in the pool. It was wonderful to see people we hadn’t met before and also to revisit with others. It was a beautiful evening and fun for all.

Unit 42B

Eighteen residents from Unit 42B recently carpooled to Tempe’s Mill Avenue District on one fine end of summer day and participated in an hour long Tour and Tasting at the Arizona Distilling Company to learn more about how handcrafted, small barrel whiskey is made locally. The distillery’s team spent seven years refining their technique, sourcing local grains and parsing plenty of legalese until opening their doors in 2013. The fruit of all that labor is Copper City Bourbon, barrel-aged for at least two years and named for an Arizona brewery that was shut down during prohibition. Though bourbon remains the micro distillery’s cornerstone, the small company is branching out into other grain beverages and our visiting residents support its entrepreneurial spirit. Afterward the group walked around the Hayden Square area, stopping into some of the more unique shops and ended their day with a hearty meal at Rula Bula Irish Pub. A great time was had by all and they’re looking forward to the next destination. Fall baseball anyone?

Unit 51

Perfect weather and lovely scenery made a great backdrop for our October Ladies’ Luncheon at Verrado Grille hosted by Lori Lee Rea. A few snowbirds had returned so it was nice to see faces that had been missing for a few months. A special part of this month’s luncheon was our guest speaker Terri Otzmann who is a member of the Blue Star Moms of the Southwest Valley. She and the other volunteers of that group prepare care packages for our troops away from home, carefully packing them with a variety of food, toiletries, games, letters and other necessary items that we take for granted but mean a lot to them, including a big dose of love! Her talk inspired all of us attending and began Unit 51’s newest fundraiser. The social committee began to collect monetary donations, as well as items to pack and hand write letters for our troops. For a minimum $15 donation (the cost of postage per each box sent), a large blue metallic star, painted and prepared by Lori, was placed in each donor’s yard for 24 hours. Unit 51 residents were excited to help such a worthy cause as well as be a star in their neighborhood!

Unit 52

Almost 70 Unit 52 partyers enjoyed a gala Oktoberfest on Sunday, October 5 around the lovely pool and patio areas of Ed and Meg Chrisman’s home. To a background of Hofbrauhaus music everyone dined very well on delicious appetizers, potato and salad sides and desserts brought by the guests and brats and keg beer supplied by the Social Committee.

We were delighted to have seven of our newest couples attend who were welcomed to their first fun Unit 52 party and given name tags with a big red dot to introduce them.

Social Chair Carol Liltz and her tremendous committee organized this special event. Madelyn Jacques took reservations and committee members Emily Grotta, Leann Drummond, Maggie Eggleston, Nancy Rosenfeld and Karen Borchers plus some wonderful husbands worked hard the night of the party. Committee members Carolyn Minichiello, Susan Armstrong and Phyllis Kotyluk helped in the planning.

Upcoming Unit 52 events include a return couples fun night November 11 at Augies and our annual holiday party December 10 in the Chianti Room at the Tuscany Clubhouse.

The ladies who lunch in Unit 52 enjoyed a delightful luncheon Wednesday, October 8 at Mimi’s Café. As there were a number of new residents among the 25 ladies attending, everyone gave a mini resume on where they are from, their family, when they moved to PebbleCreek and where they live in the unit.

The comments were profuse, not only on the excellent menu but on the cheerful, professional and very organized service afforded the group. This was voted a keeper. Emily Grotta was in charge of the arrangements and reservations.

There was lots of talk about the very successful Oktoberfest party the previous Sunday as well as upcoming events including a return night to Augies in November and our annual Holiday Party in December. We are looking forward to the return of more of the snowbirds.
