Unit Happenings

Unit 19

Donna Frole and Barbara Risden

Forty residents of Unit 19 met for breakfast at Mimi’s on Tuesday, February 21. Our menu consisted of five different items to choose from with something for everyone. Along with meeting new people, we discussed some future get-togethers and hope to start working on them shortly. Our unit has changed considerably so come out for our future events and make new friends.

Unit 27A

Ah ha! Now it makes more sense, ladies!

On February 23, 13 fabulous feminine neighbors from Unit 27A took a sentimental journey up to the Arizona Broadway Theater in Peoria in search of some common-sense explanations! They enjoyed a delicious lunch, toe-tappin’ and hand-clappin’ music and sisterhood bonding as they enjoyed the hilarious musical parody Menopause. Yep, reworded lyrics to such memorable tunes of the 60s and 70s such as Change, Change, Change and Don’t Say Nothing Bad About My Body have the women walking (and dancing) around the neighborhood with A New Attitude, indeed! Finally, the mysterious mood swings and chocolate cravings make absolute sense—all the myths have been debunked!

Unit 30

Rosemary Holmes

The gals from Unit 30 met for lunch and to participate in the Academy Award Trivia challenge. Many laughs were shared. The winner of the Oscar went to Jan Edwards.

Unit 34

Esther West

On February 22, Diane Buchanan and Esther West co-hosted a luncheon for friends and neighbors in Unit 34. The ladies met at Red’s Bar and Grill at the Wigwam Resort for a very pleasant lunch at the outdoor patio adjacent to the golf course. The outdoor setting was perfect on a beautiful, sunny day; the menu offerings were very good; service was prompt and gracious and the company exceptional! Everyone enjoyed the outing. Afterward the ladies met at the Litchfield Park Historical Museum at the corner of Litchfield Road and Camelback. Diane had arranged for a tour during which the docents escorted the group back in time to the early days of the Goodyear Tire Company and the Company’s efforts to establish their own source of the unique cotton used in their tire manufacturing operations. The west valley has a rich history of Litchfield Park, Goodyear Farms and The Southwest Cotton Company. The presentation ended with details of present day multi-generational families still prominent in the west valley’s agricultural business. The visit to the museum was very interesting and the docents very knowledgeable. The tour was compressed to one hour but many voiced an interest in returning to view the many photos and antiques from the early days in the west valley where many of us currently live or spend the winter months.

Unit 51

Carol Adkins

The old adage “if you build it, they will come” gave the Unit 51 ladies an opportunity to experience an established restaurant in its new building. Thanks to our hostesses Faye Sessoms and Jerri Christensen, 24 ladies enjoyed delicious food and excellent service in the beautiful open air room at the new Babbo’s Italian Eatery in Surprise.

Unit 53

Sandy Stephens

Virginia Warden and Janet Valentini hosted the February luncheon for Unit 53 gals at the Claim Jumper in Avondale. Seventeen smiling faces faced the camera after a lunch filled with conversations covering a wide range of subjects and getting to know new people some of us hadn’t met. Karen Knadler in our unit handles all the organization and the hosts pick the restaurant and make the reservations.

Tim and Susan Donlan were gracious enough to host our Unit 53 February Happy Hour. Unit 53 Happy Hours have become so popular and it’s nice when the weather permits some of the crowd to sit outside since it’s standing room only inside. Some friends were keeping toasty around the fire pit. Their darling Schnauzer, Gracie, made everyone feel welcome and made the rounds getting pets and getting fed doggie ice cream. A good time was had by everyone who attended this lively evening of camaraderie and getting to enjoy all the munchies brought by everyone who attended.

Unit 61

Kathy Gorchesky

Think. Solve. Escape. Fourteen neighbors from Unit 61 took on the puzzling challenge of trying to figure out clues and locks in order to solve the puzzle to escape the locked room. They visited Epic Escape Room in Phoenix where there are several themed rooms. The group broke into two teams and took on the challenge. The two groups had identical rooms named “The Fortune Teller.” The door is locked behind you and you must unlock the clues to escape the room within 55 minutes. Clues are given while the group works together searching the room for further information that will lead to a key or cabinet that when unlocked provides another solution. The goal was to figure out the secret the fortune teller was hiding. Neither of the groups was able to escape—we only needed five more minutes to complete the game. Everyone had such a great time. So much fun in Unit 61!
