Summer on the courts – no sweat

Rana Cukierski

Most of the snowbirds have departed to different parts of the country to cooler temperatures. We certainly wish them a safe and happy summer; however, the show must go on! The Tennis Club continues with exciting summer socials. May 15 was our Under the Lights evening social. Our Tournament Director John Flynn filled seven courts with players of all levels to have some good games and fun competition rotating with different partners. When play ended Jeanne Schimmelpfennig, our social director, served a large variety of delicious desserts and refreshments. It was a pleasant evening for everyone and, of course, our weather was just delightful.

Our June social is planned for Wednesday, June 17; play will begin in the morning. Friday, July 17 will be our last social of the summer. There will be more details for both socials posted on our website soon. No Board meeting or social in August. The Board takes a nonpaid vacation! But look out; September social will be a blast!

We continue our tennis racquet donation program for the kids at the Goodyear Park and Recreation Department. The racquets donated by all of us are given to the kids who are less fortunate and are encouraged to get involved in playing tennis. The Pro at the Park District, Kevin Lyons, and our President Jerry Santy are working together to formulate several tournaments with our tennis players and the kids.

The artificial grass in front of the Tuscany Tennis Center will be replaced with a new and upgraded artificial grass. It is time to take out the old and bring in the new. This will be much easier to maintain.

A new team for the WVSL women’s league has been formed. The Women’s 3.5 In Sync will start in October and their matches will be on Fridays. Good luck to all of you!
