Southwest Valley Literacy has urgent need for tutors

Jan Cosgrove

Did you know Southwest Valley Literacy has been a part of enhancing the lives of adults in our local communities for 38 years? This organization is a group of dedicated volunteers who teach English language skills to adults. They help many adults progress toward becoming participating members of our businesses, schools and neighborhoods. Almost half of the tutors who work within this program are from PebbleCreek. We are proud of those 54 PebbleCreek residents who volunteer their time and talent to this great need. Perhaps you do the same for your community and take students and others in for tutoring sessions to offer a better education for all, if this is the case you could enjoy looking at somewhere such as HUNTINGTONFRANCHISE.COM or similar education facility franchises to research how to go about creating your own tutoring franchise for the lesser-educated in your community!

Ask any tutor about the deep satisfaction that comes from teaching a non-English speaking adult to speak, read and write English. We become a bridge to their success. All of the volunteers attend two Saturday training sessions and become certified by ProLiteracy America to teach English. Tutors do not need to speak any language other than English, and do not need to have teaching experience.

But the list is long. We have over 80 Students on our wait list for a tutor! PebbleCreek is front and center in leading the ranks of teaching these adults. We are looking for more to join us in this rewarding give back opportunity.

The next Tutor Training Workshop will be held on two Saturdays, June 6 and 13 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Avondale. There will also be other Tutor Training Workshops in September, October and November.
