Self help–caring for the caregiver

Rayma Scalzo

As a caregiver for someone with Alzheimer’s/Dementia disease, do you feel stressed out? Overwhelmed at times? If so, we encourage you to attend our meeting on Saturday, July 15 at 9:30 a.m. Come and learn how to build a self-care plan with positive thinking, mindfulness and relaxation.

We all know that care-giving can be a rewarding experience; however, sometimes the role of caregiver comes at a cost, low emotional reservoirs, stress and fatigue to name a few. Generally, your first instinct is to help others before helping yourself. In reality, it should be the other way around; only when you help yourself first can you lovingly and effectively help others.

A self-care plan can help you enhance your health and wellbeing, manage your stress and maintain calmness in hectic moments. This presentation will help you identify and apply self-care strategies, practices and community resources that will support your wellbeing.

We are pleased to have Jackie Smith as our presenter this month. Jackie works for FSL, The Foundation for Senior Living, and has a 12-year career in the health and senior wellness field.

Please join us for this educational presentation. The FSL is a great resource and has lots to offer. Jackie will be happy to share their information with us.

Following the presentation, our time will be spent with members asking questions or sharing experiences. Our group provides information, resources and comfort for those residents who are caregivers for loved ones who have Alzheimer’s or any type of dementia. They could live in the home, at a local care facility or out of state.

Respite Care

We may be able to provide free respite care for those having Alzheimer’s/Dementia disease. This allows the caregivers the opportunity and peace of mind to attend the discussion group meeting. If you let us know, we will try to arrange for someone to come to your home during the two-hour meeting. For this assistance, we do ask that you RSVP by Thursday, July 13.

Monthly Breakfast

The caregivers meet for breakfast on the first Saturday of each month at 9:00 a.m. This gives them an opportunity to get to know each other on a more personal level. Knowing others who are going through the same journey is very beneficial.

For location of the meeting or to RSVP for respite care, please contact Rayma at 623-935-1819 or send an email to [email protected].
