Any of the four 16-man teams battling in the White Tanks Team Golf Competition in the fourth and final round could have won the cup. But, this year our own PebbleCreek team edged out the Sun City Festival overall by a mere 1.5 points to take home the cup. This was an amazing win for PebbleCreek and its captain, Lee Havener.

Going into the final round, PebbleCreek was one point behind Sun City Grand, winner of the last six cups. As is tradition in the final round, the two highest point teams play each other. With one point available for each of the 16 individual matches, PebbleCreek won 9.5 points from Sun City Grand on their home course for a competition total of 23.5 points. In the meantime, Sun City Festival took 11.5 points off of Westbrook Village for a competition total of 22 points and gave the PebbleCreek team quite a scare.

The final point count was PebbleCreek, 23.5; Sun City Festival, 22; Sun City Grand, 21.5; and Westbrook Village, 13.

The White Tanks Team Golf Competition matches four West Valley age 55+ golf communities in a friendly but competitive golf tourney played over the summer. The first round was played on May 17 at Tuscany Falls West at PebbleCreek using a two-man alternate shot format. Round two was played on June 21 at the Vistas/Lakes course at Westbrook Village using a two-man best-ball format. Round three was played on July 26 at the Copper Canyon course at Sun City Festival using a two-man scramble format. The finals took place on Aug. 23 on the Desert Springs course at Sun City Grand with 16 individual matches. A total of eight points was at stake for each of the first three rounds and 16 points in the finals. A professional also plays on each team, and the results of their match is used as a tie-breaker for the daily prize awarded, but not the overall competition.

Some players participated in all four rounds, but due to summer vacations, the team leader draws from the more than 20+players to fill the 16 spots. The job of team leader is a difficult one as they must recruit players, balance schedules, match teammates, communicate with players and other communities, and arrange travel. Lee Havener did a fabulous job this year, as he has done for the last six years.

The 2019 PebbleCreek team members are Pete Bahnmueller, Dean Bass, Bob Burghdorf, Bruce Carlyle, John Curtin, Bob Curtis, Larry Dick, Tony Dilger, Joe Fanning, Wayne Gearig, Lyman Gallup, Dave Green, Lee Havener, Skip Holmes, Brad Johnston, Art Krudener, Joe Little, Bob Millikan, Reuben Rivera, Mike Romano, Stan Smith, Howie Tiger, Dave Torres, Jerry Treece, Chuck Veltri, and Jim Wolff, along with pros Dave Vader and Mark Hernon.

Congratulations to all the players for a job well done!
