PebbleCreek Pickleball is golden!

Vicki Carter

This is true not only because of the many medals won by our club members at the recent USAPA sanctioned pickleball tournament but because of the tremendous turnout and support of our member volunteers. Within 17 different categories, there were a total of 213 volunteers over the three days of the tournament. They stepped up to the plate whenever they were needed, including using every possible means to dry the courts on Thursday morning. “The best part of this tournament was the tremendous team support. It made my job as Tournament Director one of the best I’ve undertaken,” says Mike Crabtree.

One of the external participants wrote, “I just finished playing in the tournament, and I have to say that was the best run tournament I’ve ever been in. The hospitality was by far beyond anyone’s expectations, the volunteers were so nice all the time and always had a big smile on their faces, and the facility was beautiful. Great job.” This is just one example of many comments received from both external participants and our own members.

Special thanks go out to our major sponsors, Earnhardt Motors, Estrella Parkway Medical Center, Waste Management, and Franklin Sports, who provided each tournament participant with three X-40 pickleballs. As evidenced by the numerous sponsor banners displayed on the courts, we had strong support from the community and the tournament was a financial success. Funds raised will be directed to many future capital expenditures to benefit our members.

Participants were eligible to win one of the many prizes donated by Paddletek, Selkirk Sport, Pickleball Central, Steve McElroy, Deb and Steve Smedley, Dr. David Ott (OrthoArizona), Linda Costello (Cherry Creek Mortgage Company), Foot Solutions, Estrella Mountain Dentistry, Title Boxing Club, Papa Murphy’s Pizza, Harkins Theatres, Cindy Watty (Alfresco Travel). “I won the Selkirk Epic paddle. I was so excited to win and I love the paddle,” says Maureen Dolan, PebbleCreek Pickleball Club member.

Medal winners were delighted to receive an engraved wineglass that represented either gold, silver or bronze, a pleasant change to the usual medal.

Last but not least, our club members won 32 medals – eight gold, 11 silver and 13 bronze. Had the Women’s Doubles event not been cancelled due to rain, the medal count would have been even higher. PebbleCreek Pickleballers rule!
