Open call for PebbleCreekers interested in musical theater

Carrie Mataraza

ShowTime is excited about our new 2017/2018 season, beginning with our November production of Back to Nashville, but would you believe that we are also revving up for the future shows we are already planning for PebbleCreek for next year?

That’s right. Show planning begins a year and sometimes two years ahead of performance: selecting a show (sometimes even writing it!), getting the production rights, designing sets and costumes, preparing the music, working out the technical details and, whew!, so much more before we even set foot on stage.

That’s why we are putting out this invitation to all PebbleCreekers who are interested in working with us, whether it’s as a performer or on the production team. If you are new to PebbleCreek or a long-time resident who has experience in community theater, we’d love to include you in the goings-on at ShowTime and include you on our team. If you have performed or directed prior to coming to PebbleCreek – we’d love to welcome you to ShowTime. If you have any singing and dancing skills, yes, we like that too. In fact, we’d welcome you with all the camaraderie ShowTime people are known for.

ShowTime is an active performance club that brings music and comedy to the Renaissance stage twice a year, fall and spring. We are all volunteers who love to participate in community musical theater, produced, directed and performed by our own residents.

Beyond Glory: Portraits of Heroism

Laurie Farquhar

The dictionary defines a hero as 1) an illustrious warrior; 2) a person admired for achievements and noble qualities; 3) one who shows great courage. Those are three different definitions for the word hero and all of them describe the moving accounts portrayed in the PebbleCreek Players and ShowTime joint production of Beyond Glory.

Beyond Glory is a one-act show which presents the stories of eight servicemen from WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Each of them, in their own voice, recalls the combat experiences that earned him the Medal of Honor, the United States military’s highest award. They are not glamorous or good stories but as Clarence Sasser, an army medic in the Vietnam War says, they are “consistent with war.” Director Cathy Lindstrom calls the stories powerful and she expects that with “the varied military backgrounds here in PebbleCreek, and the high level of patriotic support for the military, this will be a production that will touch us all.”

Beyond Glory will be presented on Friday, December 15 and Saturday, December 16 in the Renaissance Theater at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are only $10 and will go on sale on Saturday, November 18, both online and in the Renaissance Theater, starting at 8:00 a.m. Online tickets may be purchased by logging onto the PebbleCreek HOA website at www.pebblecreekhoa.org. Click on Things to Do and scroll down to Ticket Sales. About halfway down the page is the link Buy Tickets Online. For this show, there will be no service fee for online ticket purchases.

All proceeds from Beyond Glory will be donated to the Homes for Heroes Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping heroes from all walks of life that have special housing needs or require financial assistance. Established shortly after 9/11, the foundation has given more than $25 million to firefighters, law enforcement, military (active, reserves and veteran), healthcare workers, EMS and teachers to help them save on a home and on every day home related purchases.

Everyone has different ideas on what it takes to be a hero. After seeing Beyond Glory, you will not only know what it takes to be awarded the Medal of Honor, but you will also see the price that is paid for heroism.

Kathy Mitchell at the T.G.I.S. Grand Finale on September 29, 2017

Kathy Mitchell at the T.G.I.S. Grand Finale on September 29, 2017

November Musician of the Month, Kathy Mitchell

Norma Whitley

Kathy G. Mitchell was born in East St. Louis, Illinois. She grew up in southern California and lived in Seattle, Washington for over 30 years.

At the age of 10, Kathy started piano lessons. As she continued to play, her love for piano was set. She played at church and sang in the high school choir, then continued singing while playing the piano after she graduated high school, which allowed her to pursue both of her passions. Kathy is a graduate of the University of Washington and a Huskies fan.

In her 20’s Kathy was a full time musician at a piano bar and part of a dance trio. After completing her BA in Psychology and MBA in her 30’s, she began a business career with Bank of America, while continuing as a semi-pro musician in her spare time. She sang the National Anthem at a Seattle SuperSonics game when Downtown Freddie Brown played for them. Kathy also sang with a threesome group called Jig Saw, then formed her own group Espresso performing on keyboard and as a vocalist with three other people.

Kathy met her husband John in Seattle, Washington. They have been happily married for 31 years and have children and grandchildren that reside in Seattle, Washington and Washington, D.C.

When Kathy retired from the banking industry after 25 years as a Senior Vice President at Bank of America, she and John moved to PebbleCreek in 2010. They were attracted to the adult living lifestyle and especially the Renaissance Theater. It has been the perfect choice for them and they feel they have the best friends possible!

After she met Jane Cook at Karaoke, Kathy initially worked behind the scenes at the Renaissance Theater. She is now actively involved in ShowTime as a performer and director. Kathy was the director for Smokey Joe’s Café, playing keyboard with the band, Night at the Renaissance and Damn Yankees. She played the part of Dolly Levi in Hello Dolly and Mrs. Tottendale in The Drowsy Chaperone.

She has also been a guest artist with the PebbleCreek Big Band and is busy as one half of the musical duo of Kathy and Jeff. Kathy says that it all started when Melissa Kallett labeled her the PebbleCreek Lounge Lizard and winner of PebbleCreek’s Got Talent in 2012.

She loves all types of music from light jazz, Broadway and standards to country. She believes that good music is good music. Her favorite artist is Diana Krall. Kathy also enjoys golf, Mahjongg, Canasta, movies and scotch tasting.

Kathy is thankful for all the wonderful friends and family for their outpouring of support and love during her bout with breast cancer. She is now healthy and back in the swing of things and recently performed with Jeff Buda as the Kathy and Jeff duo at the T.G.I.S. Grand Finale. The PebbleCreek community also joins Kathy in celebrating her recovery
