AWGA State Amateur Seniors Championship

The Arizona Women’s Golf Association (AWGA) State Amateur Seniors Championship was held on September 12-14, 2018 at Tonto Verde Golf Club in Rio Verde, AZ. The tournament was a 54-hole stroke play competition on the Peaks Course, which takes its name from the signature Four Peaks Mountain that towers in the background to the east. The course has been carved from the desert and designed to incorporate much of the natural, desert terrain creating a true, desert golf experience. The PebbleCreek Ladies Golf Association (PCLGA) was represented in this annual tournament by six members: Andrea Dilger, Ellen Enright, Jane Hee, Kathy Hubert-Wyss, Carol Sanders and Carolyn Suttles. Players reported the course was beautiful; however, the weather was a little toasty! In the end, Carol Sanders came home the big winner placing second low net in her flight; congratulations, Carol!

Special thanks to Layne Sheridan and Lyman Gallup, who are pictured with the PCLGA players. Layne was previously a Rules Official in Wyoming, and recently became a member of the AWGA Rules Committee. This tournament was her first as a Rules Official in Arizona. She is also a member of the PCLGA and serves as the Rules Committee Chair.

Lyman is the Chair of the AWGA Rules Committee for the third year in a row and goes to each venue used by the AWGA for tournaments (11 of them) where he spends about four or five hours in a pre-event visit. He verifies that the hazards and out-of-bounds are properly marked and also marks ground under repair and identifies course issues that may arise for the players and officials. Along with those many duties, he identifies where the hole locations will be for each day of the tournament and is in charge of lining up the rules officials who work each of the AWGA events. Lyman was named volunteer of the year this past spring at the AWGA annual banquet, a very well-deserved recognition!
