Red, white and blue was everywhere as 40 members of the PCLGA celebrated the Fourth of July at Eagle’s Nest. Several carts were decorated and creativity was on display with some zany costumes.
Play started at 6:30 a.m. with tee times rather than the usual shotgun. Each player was given a small (10 inch) American flag at check-in and instructed to plant her flag on the golf course where the shot landed that equaled 72 plus her handicap. The first planted flags appeared on hole 16 and became more concentrated by hole 18. If a player completed the 18th hole without yet placing her flag on the course, she planted it behind the 18th green.
A cooler filled with ice and rolled up, lavender scented towels was located on hole No. 12 to give the players a little relief from the high temperatures. Popsicles were waiting at the score card return table which was located under a tent on the 18th green.
The winner of the flag contest was Barbara Chilton. She had 10 strokes remaining when she finished her round with a net 62, which was the low net score in the field. For this achievement she won a lovely red, white and blue boa. Low net winner in the first flight was Emma Mosley with 66; in the second flight it was Ellen Stergulz with a net 63 and in the third flight it was a tie between Tess Braden and Ruth Vohs with net 64s.
