PC Players presents Over the River and Through the Woods

Carrie Mataraza

As the title of this play suggests, this is a story about going to Grandmother’s house, in this case, two sets of Italian-American grandparents in Hoboken, New Jersey who don’t know what to do when their beloved grandson announces he may accept an offer for his dream job, but it is all the way across the country in Seattle.

Meet Frank, Aida, Nunzio and Emma, Nick’s grandparents who have been gathering round the Sunday dinner table with children and grandchildren for years. Sunday dinner has been the place to celebrate family and generations of tradition; now suddenly their beloved Sundays are falling apart. Their children have retired and are living the good life in Florida and Nick’s sister departed for another city years ago. That leaves Nick. Nick loves his grandparents; they also tend to drive him a bit crazy.

A straightforward story of the pros and cons of a fiercely close family, audiences of this show have empathy for all of the characters. The situation is poignant yet very funny, too, and there’s definitely a “generation gap” for these 80-something grandparents. Answering machines, VCRs, or how to play Trivial Pursuit–who knew?

Back to basics: what to do to keep Nick with them? Ah, they think, a girl, one who will keep him in Hoboken. Enter Caitlin O’Hare. They invite her to dinner, of course, and stuff happens, but to playwright Joe DiPietro’s credit, it’s not all what you might expect.

We won’t give the ending away here.

You are invited to participate in this family drama/comedy March 7-10 in the Renaissance Theater. Ticket sales begin Tuesday, February 13 in the Renaissance Theater from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. and online. Thereafter, take special note, tickets will be sold in a new location, the theater lobby, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. and continue, of course, online until sold out.

So pick your seats and come. The family needs you!

9 to 5 the Musical: The magic of lights and sound

Laurie Farquhar

Sound and lighting effects can add to the emotions and intensity of a show, but it requires some creative people to make them happen. Meet the talented techs who will use their behind-the-scenes-magic to make ShowTime’s upcoming production, 9 to 5 The Musical, even more fun and exciting.

Don Hlusak and Bob Oswald are in charge of the many microphones and sound effects in the show. Don has been working on sound for ShowTime since the club’s beginning almost 20 years ago and his skills with music and sound are one of the reasons why ShowTime productions have become so good. Bob has been operating the sound board for both ShowTime and PC Players for almost six years so even though he will be handling more than 25 microphones in this show, he is well prepared for the task.

As Music Director, Steve Jensen has been working with the singers for the past several months to ensure that everyone is happy with their music. Because he is a musician, he understands how to help the singers.

On the lighting side, Pat Kelly knows more about lighting and its effects than almost anyone else in PebbleCreek with more than 12 years of experience in the booth. He will be creating some amazing mood effects using color and lighting intensity, as well as running projections and videos.

Amy and Joe Volstromer are the newest members of the team. They are the techies above the audience, handling the spotlights. Although they have lived in PebbleCreek for less than two years, this will be the third time that they have climbed into the rafters for a ShowTime production.

9 to 5 The Musical is a hilarious, award-winning show based on the very popular 1980 movie of the same name. The lighting and sound effects in the ShowTime production, especially with the upgrades added to the theater in the past few years, will take the fun and excitement of this show up to the next level as the three main women in the story exact revenge on their “sexist egotistical lying hypocritical” boss.

9 to 5 The Musical will run six nights from Monday, April 9 to Saturday, April 14. Tickets go on sale both online and in the Renaissance Theater on Saturday, March 3, starting at 8:00 a.m. All tickets are $16.50 which includes the service fee. So, mark your calendars and be prepared to laugh and sing along as Violet, Doralee and Judy take charge.
