Planning ahead for LLL events

It’s easy to find out what’s coming next month. Just go to the web and check out the calendar on our website: www.LifeLongLearningatpc.org. You can look at all the events in a given month and even print it for easy reference.

We have several great events planned for November, so you’ll want to mark your calendar now so you won’t miss them.

Monday, November 10 at 10:00 am: We grew up on legends about the Wild West but are they true? Bob Boze Bell, executive editor of True West Magazine, will talk about the West present and past.

Friday, November 7 at 7:00 p.m.: Dr. Connie Mariano served as White House physician to three presidents, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush and she’s also working on a book, Presidential Secrets to Longevity.

Monday, November 10 at 10:00 a.m.: Have trouble sleeping? You’ll want to be awake when Michael Breus, PhD, a widely recognized leader in sleep studies, talks about how to sleep well and common problems in sleeping.

Wednesday, November 12 from 9:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.: The first trip of the season will be to Cosanti and Taliesin West. Cosanti is the historic site that was home to Paolo Soleri and is also where the Cosanti bells are made. Taliesin West was the winter home and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright and continues to house the architectural school he founded. Registration is required; see our website or call Judy Cowan at 623-266-1426.

Monday, November 17 at 10:00 a.m.: Two supervisory special agents from the Phoenix Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation with expertise in international terrorism will tell us—as much as they can without revealing FBI secrets—what is being done to head off attacks.

Lifelong Learning’s season opens with three wonderful programs in October

Judging from the first Premier Lecture and two Monday Morning Lectures in October, LifeLong Learning at PebbleCreek’s 2014-15 season will be better than ever.

Friday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m.: Arizona owes much to President Theodore Roosevelt who authorized Roosevelt Dam on the Salt River in 1902 setting the course for Arizona’s subsequent growth. The first Premier Lecture of the year is all about the “carry a big stick” president, presented as a one man show by Joe Wiegand.

Joe’s T.R. shares stories full of adventure, laughter and inspiration. He will recount Roosevelt’s adventures as rancher, Rough Rider and President and what led him to establish National Parks, Forests, Monuments and Wildlife Reserves. In 2008 Joe traveled across America in celebration of Teddy Roosevelt’s 150th birthday and the centennial year of the end of his presidency. He performed at the White House and at T.R.’s birthplace in New York City.

Monday, October 20 at 10:00 a.m.: What would inspire someone to found a private zoo; one that accepts no tax funds and is totally supported by its patrons?

Mickey Olson, who founded the Wildlife World Zoo and Aquarium, will be the first Monday Morning Lecturer of the season. We’ll learn what he thought about when he started the zoo 30 years ago and how it has grown over the decades. Located just a few miles away on Northern Avenue, the zoo is a favorite place to take the grandkids when they visit PebbleCreek. Come to this lecture and you’ll get an inside look at how the zoo operates and what the sure winners are with children.

Monday, October 27 at 10:00 a.m.: Last fall Dr. Alexander White held the audience spellbound as he recounted his experiences as a Holocaust survivor. This year he will return to tell us the story of Pearl Minz and her family who were neighbors of the Whites in Krosno, Poland. The family had gone to Eastern Poland when the Nazis invaded but were rounded up and sent deep into northeastern Siberia. Pearl wrote her diary on scraps of paper which she brought back to Poland after the war. White translated Pearl’s diary from Polish

to English and uses the story to teach about some of the lesser known aspects of the Holocaust.

Tickets to the Teddy Roosevelt Show are $15 per person and may be purchased Tuesdays, Thursdays or Saturdays from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the Eagle’s Nest Kiosk. Tickets to all Monday Morning Lectures are $3 per person at the door.
