LLL by the numbers

Have you ever wondered how many people LifeLong Learning reaches in PebbleCreek? The numbers for the 2018-2019 season are impressive!

There were 22 lectures in all, Monday Morning lectures with 3,117 attendees, and six Premier lectures with 1,569 attendees. Since the beginning of LifeLong Learning, there have been 303 lectures with a total attendance of 47,416.

This season there were 22 classes with 430 attendees and 14 trips with 490 participants. The special programs also had great attendance. The four TED Talks had 120 registrants, 12 PC Reads with 288 registrants and three Sunday Series with 330 registrants.

The numbers are great but LLL also strives to impress with the quality of the programs offered. Look for the new 2019-2020 program online and in the printed schedule mid- to late-September. LifeLong Learning is looking at staggering the registration dates, so be sure to check the PebbleCreek Post and your emails for information about when you can register for the new season. If you have questions, email LLL at [email protected].

Online registration is quick and easy, but you need an account to register. To sign up for an account, go to the website lifelonglearningatpc.org.

TED Talks Extravaganza in June

TED Talks is a LifeLong Learning Special Program that meets four times during the season. This summer a TED Talks Extravaganza is planned to introduce more PebbleCreek residents to this free program. It will be held Thursday, June 27 in the Renaissance Theater.

The extravaganza will feature many TED Talks and attendees can drop in or stay for the entire presentation. More details will be available in the weekly Pebble News, the June Post and the LLL website. The four TED Talks next season will be held in the Palm Room at Eagle’s Nest. Each session will show two or three TED produced talks that have been carefully selected by the LLL TED Talks team. Discussion follows the videos and it is a wonderful opportunity to discuss new ideas and share opinions. LLL has shown 51 talks in the last four years and this season will be exceptional!

TED started as a conference about Technology, Entertainment and Design in 1984. The Talks, which are amazingly educational and easy to understand, are short and presented by musicians, scientists, philosophers, business and religious leaders, philanthropists and others, all of whom have a passion for what they do. TED Talks became a non-profit in 2001 and they kept expanding the breadth of content by seeking out interesting people to communicate their passions. In 2006, they placed previously recorded presentations on their website, www.ted.com. There have been over one billion website views worldwide by people who want to learn. Some examples of topics include: Why We Laugh, You Have No Idea Where Camels Really Come From, an AI Smart Watch that Detects Seizures, How We’re Building Baby Corals to Rebuild the Reefs and How to Take Charge of Your Personal Finances.

Come to the Extravaganza and expose yourself to new ideas! It will also be a wonderful way to beat the heat and continue learning. Learning does not have to stop in the summer!

Board members Ruth Shaffer, Emily Grotta and Wendy Frumkin enjoy celebrating with volunteers Connie Armstrong and Eddie D’Aurora at the LLL happy hour March 14.

Volunteer happy hour

LLL thanked its volunteers for a successful year during a happy hour in the Chianti Room with drinks and hor d’oeuvres on March 14. It was a wonderful time to socialize and congratulate each other for a job well done. Cathy Lindstrom, President, said, “I am so pleased with the success LifeLong Learning has had this past season.”

There were several sold-out lectures, classes and trips, as well as great attendance at TED Talks, PC Reads and Great Decisions. The Sunday Series was co-sponsored with the HOA and the theme was ‘celebrating our diversity’. These free programs included a gospel singer, a Mariachi band and a Native American hoop dancer.

Our volunteers continue to deliver the top-quality events that PC residents have come to expect from us. As for what’s coming up next season, just wait! What a season it’s going to be!

St. Vincent de Paul sends thanks

When LifeLong Learning announced a clothing drive in conjunction with its “LifeLong Learning Gives Back” trip to St. Vincent de Paul March 22, little did we know how seriously PebbleCreek residents would answer the call! The LLL Center overflowed with bags and boxes full of shoes, clothing, personal items and other donations.

With the help of the HOA maintenance staff, donations were loaded on the bus for the journey downtown. Needless to say, the staff of St. Vincent’s was overjoyed! Thank you for cleaning your closets. We plan on repeating this trip next year.

Part of the trip includes making pizza for lunch for the people who come to St. Vincent de Paul for a meal. There was a surprise on this trip. That morning, ICE buses dropped off about 120 migrants, some of whom would be staying there for a few days. LLL quickly adjusted to the change of plans with just half of our trip attendees making pizza. The other half made 400 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches which they put in bags with chips, fruit and water for the children.
