Learn what’s planned for LLL season – registration opens October 1

Ruth Shaffer

LifeLong Learning has an incredible season planned (see lists in this issue) and to help you determine which programs you want to register for, we are making the website live September 1! Go to www.lifelonglearningatpc.org where you can explore all the programs that are planned.

If you need help, come to the LLL Center which will be open from 9:00 a.m. to noon September 24 through September 28. Remember, though, that you cannot register before 8:00 a.m. Arizona time on Monday, October 1, and the easiest and most efficient way is online through your personal account at www.lifelonglearningatpc.org. If you have an account, please make sure you remember your log in name and password or use the links to change them. If you are setting up a new account, remember to verify the account by clicking on the email you will get from LLL. Once you’ve registered, you can use a credit card or PayPal to pay for your choices. If you don’t pay for your tickets and registration within one hour, your place will be forfeited. As trips fill up quickly, we recommended registering and paying for them first, then go back and order tickets and register for classes.

The only way to pay by check or cash is in person at the LLL Center. On October 1 volunteers will be there from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Regular office hours will be 9:00 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday except on Mondays when there is a lecture.

Remember your information is secure and never shared, and LifeLong Learning does not have access to your credit card numbers. If you have questions, please send them to [email protected]. And remember, the season’s programs will be online for you to review on September 1. The printed schedule will be available in the clubhouse carousels, the Activities Office, Creative Arts building and the club slots across from the EN Pro Shop the last week of September.

LLL schedule cover is home grown

Arizona sunsets. Monsoon clouds. Roadrunners and mountains. There were so many wonderful photos submitted by PebbleCreek’s photographers that it was hard to decide which one should be featured on the cover of the Schedule, the primary source of information for the season.

Then we received the photo of the owls in the palm tree near Toscana’s, and we knew we had a winner. “My husband thought I was a bit crazy to go over at sunset many nights to capture these babes once they awoke. But it was great fun,” said Ruth Bindler, who took the photo that appears on the cover of the 2018-19 Schedule. Bindler will receive two tickets to a premier lecture of her choice and the photo will be in the header of the home page of the website.

Two premier lecture tickets will also go to Bill Fenster, whose photo of grasses catching the sun will appear as the cover of the program for Premier Lectures and to Ali Arendsee, whose photo “Fishing at the Verde River” will be on the cover of the Sunday Series program. Their photos will also be headers for the Schedule and website.

LifeLong Learning will also give two tickets to a Monday Morning Lecture to the following photographers whose photos will appear both in the Schedule and on the website: Barb Fenster, “Monsoon Clouds,” Monday Morning Lectures; Robert Hislop, “Protection by Cholla,” Classes; Kathy Smith, “Storm Clouds Over Sedona,” Trips; Doug Jamiolkowski, “Viewing the Echinopsis Oxygona Cactus flowers from below,” Calendar; David Kiesling, “Sunset in the White Tanks,” My Profile; Ronald Richter, “Sunset Over the Lake,” About Us; Lynn Warren, “Hikers,” Donate.

Some photographers submitted several wonderful photos but we felt it only fair to limit our selection to a single photo from each person. We also hope to repeat this contest next year, so keep those cameras handy and remember that we need high resolution photos and that a horizontal layout works better for our needs

Get ready to purchase premier tickets October 1

We anticipate large turnouts for these lectures and urge you to purchase your tickets in advance. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased beginning at 8:00 a.m. October 1 online at www.lifelonglearningatpc.org or at the LLL Center. Lectures begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Renaissance Theater.

Saturday, October 27: “Lines of Fire: The Greatest War Letters Ever Written,” Andrew Carroll

Historian Andrew Carroll collects and preserves wartime letters as a way to honor and remember the experiences of American troops and loved ones.

Saturday, November 17: “The Speed of Life,” Brian Shul

Shot down over Cambodia during the Vietnam War, Shul was severely burned in the ensuing crash and initially given up for dead. Amazingly, he returned to active duty flying and became one of only 93 men in history to fly the SR-71 spy plane, the fastest jet ever built.

Saturday, January 12: “Inside Stories of Famous People,” Hal Wingo

Hear the “stories behind the stories” from Wingo’s more than 30 years writing and editing stories about the famous people who appeared in the pages of Life and People magazines.

Friday, February 8: “Mark Twain,” George Frein

George Frein brings Mark Twain to PebbleCreek in a performance that includes a monologue, Q&A with Mr. Twain and an audience Q&A with the presenter.

Friday, February 22: “The Wall,” Dennis Wagner

The Arizona Republic and USA Today won a Pulitzer Prize for their project documenting the 2,000 miles of President Trump’s proposed wall. Wagner will share how the project came into being and what they found during the project.

Friday, March 15: “Shedding New Light on Alzheimer’s,” Dr. Steven Sabat

Alzheimer’s patients can make new memories, says Sabat, who will share productive and meaningful ways to interact with loved ones diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

Help Wanted

LifeLong Learning has several open positions. Yes, they’re volunteer positions, but the rewards are great. You’ll get to work with a wonderful group of residents and you’ll gain an understanding of how LLL’s all-volunteer team puts the season together and manages the programs during the season.

LLL Center reception desk: Assist residents with tickets, questions, etc. Friendly, outgoing, good listener. The Center is open 9:00 a.m. to noon during the season and you can pick your days!

PR, Marketing and Writing: Help promote LLL in various ways. Must have good computer skills. Work from home on your own schedule.

Class team members: Identify and schedule interesting classes for the season. Assist with registration questions and monitor classes during the season.
