Inaugural Italian American Club sports event?

Ken Minichiello

Mary Flynn thought of the idea of having an Italian American Club sports event—the Putt and Eat challenge! Mary and her committee, Barb Brace and Jackie Voccola, came up with an 18-hole putting contest that was full of obstacles including a “blackjack” challenge game. Only thing required—you just wanted to have fun and enjoy some good food. Yes, what’s an event without food—it’s the Italian way!

Fun it was—Mary matched non-golfers with golfers and they played as teams. In addition, the non-golfer and golfer had to alternate putting the ball into the hole. Believe it or not some non-golfers made more than one hole-in-one!

Add “blackjack” with putting and now you are talking prizes! If you were fortunate to get blackjack or 21, a prize from the golf pro shop was given out. Yes, again, both non-golfers and golfers were lucky winners!

After a fun round of putting we all went into Portofino’s for wine, cocktails and awards for best scores. A wonderful buffet dinner was then had in the Chianti Room; the entire event was a whole lot of fun and a great success thanks to Mary Flynn and her committee!
