Hiking Club Visits the Black Canyon Trail

Dana Thomas

The PebbleCreek Hiking Club often hikes various sections of the Black Canyon Trail (BCT). The BCT is a long-distance single track bicycle trail paralleling highway I-17 that was designated as a National Recreation Trail in 2008. Club members hiked the Bob Bentley segment, which is the southernmost section, departing from the Emory Henderson Trailhead on the New River Road near Lake Pleasant.

Sedona Santas Hike Devil’s Bridge

Lynn Warren

Devil’s Bridge is an impressive arch/bridge and is one of the most popular hiking attractions in Sedona. Almost always, there is a crowd of people waiting to have a picture taken while standing or jumping on the bridge (a la Norway’s Trolltunga). On a November outing in Sedona, 10 PC hikers donned their Santa hats and lined up for their turn on the bridge. This was much to the delight of the others waiting, who didn’t know why these old people were wearing Santa hats. After explaining that this was for a photo shoot, everyone got in the spirit, and the hikers probably could have sold their hats for a tidy profit. After the photo shoot, the hikers completed a 10-mile loop, enjoying blue skies and impressive views of Sedona red rock. Hiking remains one activity which is healthy and relatively safe during COVID-19, and it lends itself to social and physical distancing. Visit the club’s website at pchikers.org for more information and pictures.
