The Glynn family on their Alaskan cruise

Ron and Ruth Ann Glynn

In early June, Ron and Ruth Ann Glynn enjoyed a family cruise to Alaska. Cruises are always great fun and a great way to see the world. If you want to go on one but think they need to be booked a year in advance, take advantage of the last minute cruise deals! You could be travelling to the other side of the world much sooner than you think! We were joined by oldest son Bryan and daughter-in-law Ashley from Holiday, Florida and youngest son Bradley from Phoenix. After flights to Seattle, the parties met and were transported to the Holland American ship Eurodam to begin a most enjoyable cruise.

The first port of call was Juneau where some of us went on an excursion to the Mendenhall Glacier and a trip up the Mount Robert’s Tramway. The glacier and falls were well worth the enjoyable hike to see them close up and the views from the top of Mount Roberts were beautiful to see with the cruise ships in the harbor. Most of the following day was spent cruising Glacier Bay National Park and viewing other glaciers nearby and the many rivulets flowing into the bay.

Sitka, which was the capital of the Russian Empire in Alaska, was the next stop with an opportunity to visit St. Michael’s Cathedral, established by the Russians, and other places in town. After cruising through the night, we arrived at Ketchikan and enjoyed the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show. It was very entertaining with former world champions competing in activities like log rolling, pole climbing and use of their axes in other events. Ketchikan was also a very nice place to do some shopping.

Our last port was beautiful Victoria on Vancouver Island and an excursion to see some of the highlights of the city. Our arrival in Seattle the next morning was the conclusion of a special trip for all. The cruise was scheduled at that time of the year because we didn’t think the end of September would be a good time to visit Alaska!
