For the third year, members of the PebbleCreek Democratic Club participated in the Women’s March, which, under the banner ‘Rising Together,’ attracted more than 6,700 participants. The mile-long march started and ended at the Capitol.

Twelve club members attended the 2019 march, whose theme was diversity. Event speakers represented various groups, including Black, Hispanic, LGBTQIA, Muslim, Native American and the Deaf and Hearing Impaired. One speaker, who was totally deaf, asked that instead of clapping or cheering, the audience raise their hands and wave as a visual cue to her.

The theme of the 2019 march was reflective of the organizers’ commitment to standing in solidarity with those whose work overlaps and intersects with the values on which the Women’s March was founded. Specifically, this year they partnered with organizations and groups whose main objectives revolve around the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), fully funding Arizona public schools and safety on school campuses.

Marchers carried signs on a variety of issues: ending gun violence, protecting the reproductive rights of women, supporting the rights of the LGBTQIA community, advocating for wage equity, defending civil rights and promoting environmental justice, the rights of immigrants and disability rights. Following the speeches, participants had opportunities to connect with progressive organizations, change-makers and to register to vote. Speakers and marchers advocating Democratic principles and values were supported by live music, live art, interactive experiences and food trucks.

Although all age groups were present, from small children to Boomers, it was heartening to see so many young people engaged and interested in areas that may affect them now and in the future.
