All Quiet at the Ballpark

Fred Dresser

Needless to say, the ballpark is quiet as the coronavirus shut it down in March. The PebbleCreek Senior Softball Association (PCSSA) shut their season down with six games left to play. With the season being cancelled, the players are looking forward to the 2020-21 season that will begin in October.

This past season marked the twenty-fifth year of play for the PCSSA. When you look back at the history of this great league, it all came about because a group of guys got together and approached Ed Robson to build a ballfield. The league, like waist sizes, grew from two teams to fifteen teams this past season and will expand even more this coming season.

The PCSSA has not slowed down as a new warm up area is being prepared for players to warm up before their game. This area is located on the third base side and will consist of a batting net, pitching rubber, and a home plate. Pitchers and players will be able to loosen up before their game to help avoid any injuries.

This warm up area was funded by the players themselves by contributing to a capital improvement fund that was established to meet field needs.

October is just around the corner, so get ready to see your neighbors and friends once more enjoy a game that many played as kids. Here’s a quote from Jim Bouton who played for the New York Yankees, Seattle Pilots, Houston Astros, and Atlanta Braves that sums up why those of us in our golden years continue to play this game:

“You spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball and, in the end, it turns out that it was the other way around.”
