Trip: Kartchner Caverns Feb. 15, 2020

Kartchner Caverns State Park is an interesting and fun Tucson day trip! Your tour will last about an hour and a half to two hours. You enter the caves through a couple of airlocks! Since this is a living cave, they are careful about protecting the integrity of the cave and controlling the atmosphere. The tour is a very easy walk on well-constructed pathways throughout the caves. When you arrive at the park, leave all your belongings in the bus, they do not allow any cameras, backpacks, purses, food, or drink in the cave. This is necessary for the protection of the caves so nothing is dropped or left in the caves by accident. The cave has an average temperature of 70° Fahrenheit (21° Celsius) and 99 percent humidity year-round. Think Florida in August. Wheelchairs are allowed in the caves, but some limitations to size. To review more on what kinds of mobility tools can be used click here. The caves existence became public knowledge in 1988 when its purchase was approved as an Arizona State Park. Extraordinary precautions have been taken during its development to conserve the cave’s near-pristine condition after its discovery in February 1978. Kartchner Caverns is home to one of the world’s longest soda straw stalactites, the tallest and most massive column in Arizona, the world’s most extensive formation of brushite moonmilk and many other unusual formations such as shields, totems, helictites, and rimstone dams. This trip goes on sale Nov. 25 at the Activities Office. Check only please; $135 per person. A picnic lunch included. We will visit the Rotunda Room Cave on this trip. On sale now.
