A tribute to our loving friend Shirley Smith – A PebbleCreek legend, gracious lady and amazing artist

Dee Smart and Angie Hayes

Shirley Smith is a PebbleCreek legend, a gracious lady and an amazing artist.

In 1996 Shirley and Hobart (Bo) Smith moved to PebbleCreek from Portland, Oregon. Shirley brought with her an exceptional love of life that she shared with all us who knew her.

Shirley worked in the Expression Gallery for 21 years. She was known as our Ambassador as her enthusiasm for life in PebbleCreek and especially the arts was infectious. Shirley graciously and willingly shared her knowledge of art with those who sought her input on their projects. Her tactful and positive comments were an encouragement to her fellow artists.

This busy lady was involved in the planning of the first Arts and Craft Center on the Eagle’s Nest side as well as the planning of the Current Arts and Craft Center.

She participated in PCLGA events and was one of the original members of the 18 Holers Golf group. She was very proud of the four hole-in-ones that she had made during her golfing career.

Along with sidekick Bo, they organized the Burrowing Owl Project to protect and nurture the families of burrowing owls found in various sections of the Eagle’s Nest golf course.

Many residents own treasured pastel paintings of family members, pets, animals and landscapes, done by Shirley. She could always capture that particular twinkle in the eye of the subject.

She was a lady in every sense of the word–always well-dressed, very articulate, generous, compassionate and modest and lucky for all of us, she always displayed a keen sense of humor and wonderful smile which frequently made our day!

Shirley was the kind of person who always gave a little bit extra, sending jokes and interesting articles via email to her special friends.

She was a Breast Cancer survivor for 50 years. Her adventurous spirit led to a lot of traveling with family and friends to vacation spots such as Hawaii, Alaska, New York City, Washington DC, and of course, Rocky Point.

Her passing has sent her on another adventure. We will miss her dearly.
